Staphylococcus microbes in the bovine skin microbiome attract blood-feeding stable flies

چکیده

The human skin microbiome reportedly contributes to the attraction of mosquitoes hosts. We tested hypothesis that bovine microbes affect blood-feeding stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans , their Microbes were collected from a calf and adult cow, subsequently isolated identified by mass spectrometry genetic sequencing. Separate groups ( i ) four Staphylococcus congeners S. chromogenes sciuri simulans, succinus ii three bacterial heterogeners Glutamicibacter protophormiae Corynebacterium stationis Wautersiella sp.) grown on agar, each attracted flies in still-air olfactometers, as did congener singly. also room bioassays. In greenhouse bioassays with paired black barrels visual (surrogate host) stimuli, treatment barrel baited agar induced significantly more fly alighting responses than control sterile agar. This effect could not be demonstrated cattle farm, possibly because chemically visually complex surroundings. Ammonia emitted synthetic blend microbe odorants enhanced attractiveness ammonia. Optimal likely requires integration multimodal host cues.

Sugar feeding in adult stable flies.

Adult stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans L.) are known to feed readily on sugars in the laboratory. However, little is known concerning the extent of stable fly sugar feeding in wild populations. We examined the frequency of sugar feeding in stable flies collected on Alsynite sticky traps in rural and urban environments. In addition, stable flies were visually examined to determine whether blood...

The Microbiome and Blood Pressure: Can Microbes Regulate Our Blood Pressure?

The surfaces of the human body are heavily populated by a highly diverse microbial ecosystem termed the microbiota. The largest and richest among these highly heterogeneous populations of microbes is the gut microbiota. The collection of microbes and their genes, called the microbiome, has been studied intensely through the past few years using novel metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metab...

Human Microbiome: A Genetic Bazaar for Microbes?

A recent study suggests that lateral gene transfer has been particularly intense among human-associated microbes. What can this tell us about our relationship with our internal microbial world?

Social attraction mediated by fruit flies' microbiome.

Larval and adult fruit flies are attracted to volatiles emanating from food substrates that have been occupied by larvae. We tested whether such volatiles are emitted by the larval gut bacteria by conducting tests under bacteria-free (axenic) conditions. We also tested attraction to two bacteria species, Lactobacillus brevis, which we cultured from larvae in our lab, and L. plantarum, a common ...

Flybrella: a device to attract and kill house flies.

Flybrella is a lightweight inexpensive trap that can be suspended like an upside-down umbrella in prominent locations where house flies, Musca domestica L., rest. It consists of a solid, cylindrical backbone to which is attached a perforated transparent tube, or baffle, with a commercial sugar/toxicant strip affixed inside. Centered directly beneath the tube and also attached to the backbone is...
